BIRTH CHART ATLAS / THE CONVERSATIONS

Aspects are angles.Interpretation starts after the math.

Aspects measure the angular distance between planets. The geometry tells you whether two chart functions fuse, flow, create pressure, or face each other across an axis.

ANGLE + ORB

Exactness controls the volume.

An aspect’s orb is the distance from the exact target angle. A square at 90.4° has a 0.4° orb and speaks more loudly than a square at 96°. Exactness describes signal strength—not whether the contact is good.

THE ASTROLOGY.AC ORB POLICY

Five angles. Published limits.

These are the exact major-aspect limits used by the birth-chart engine. The method is deterministic and tested.

AspectExact angleMaximum orbWorking dynamic
Conjunction0°± 8°fusion
Sextile60°± 5°opening
Square90°± 7°friction
Trine120°± 7°flow
Opposition180°± 8°polarity

The calculator measures the shortest separation between two geocentric tropical longitudes, compares it with each target angle, retains contacts inside the published orb, and ranks them by exactness. Other astrologers may use different orb policies; the number should be shown, not hidden behind a generic label.

THE FIVE MAJOR ASPECTS

Geometry changes the relationship.

Interpret the planet pair and the angle together. “Venus–Mars” is not a complete reading until the aspect is named.

01

0° · ORB UP TO 8°

Conjunction

What happens when two functions share one channel?

Two bodies occupy nearly the same zodiac degree. Their jobs become concentrated and difficult to separate. The combination can cooperate or compete; conjunction does not automatically mean harmony.

02

60° · ORB UP TO 5°

Sextile

Which usable opportunity appears when I participate?

Two bodies are roughly sixty degrees apart. Astrologers read the sextile as a workable opening or complementary skill, but one that often becomes clearer through choice and practice rather than pure momentum.

03

90° · ORB UP TO 7°

Square

Which two needs demand movement at the same time?

Two bodies are roughly ninety degrees apart. Their functions create pressure that resists passive resolution. A square can describe conflict, but also the repeated effort that builds skill, differentiation, and productive motion.

04

120° · ORB UP TO 7°

Trine

Which ability works so naturally that I may overlook it?

Two bodies are roughly 120 degrees apart. Their functions exchange energy easily, often through signs of the same element. Ease is not automatically good; an unexamined trine can repeat itself as effortlessly as a talent can.

05

180° · ORB UP TO 8°

Opposition

How can both ends of the axis receive a real job?

Two bodies face each other across the zodiac. Their functions become highly visible through contrast, projection, and relationship. Integration is rhythmic: neither pole needs to defeat the other permanently.

FLOW IS NOT GOOD / FRICTION IS NOT BAD

Ease and value are different questions.

FLOW

Trines and sextiles

Energy exchanges more easily. That can support talent, relief, and cooperation. It can also repeat an unexamined habit because the pattern does not create enough discomfort to demand attention.

FRICTION

Squares and oppositions

Different needs become harder to ignore. That can produce conflict, effort, attraction, differentiation, and skill. Pressure becomes useful when each function receives a conscious role.

FUSION

Conjunctions

Two functions share a channel. The result can feel unified, concentrated, contradictory, or overwhelming depending on the planets, sign, house, and available ways to separate their jobs.

SAME GEOMETRY / DIFFERENT CONTEXT

Natal, transit, and synastry are not interchangeable.

NATAL

One chart, permanent pattern

A natal aspect compares two bodies at the birth instant. It describes a recurring relationship between functions inside the same chart.

TRANSIT

Current sky, temporary activation

A transit aspect compares a moving planet now with a natal placement. It develops, becomes exact, and separates over time.

SYNASTRY

Two charts, cross-person contact

A synastry aspect compares a body in one person’s chart with a body in another. It describes a contact, not the quality of the whole relationship.
